How to Paint a Zentangle Snowflake with Acrylics

I’m sharing a fun winter project: a Zentangle snowflake painting. This is a great painting activity for kids ages 7 and up, as well as for beginner painters who want to practice their acrylic painting skills.

This project combines the calm of Zentangle-inspired line work with the creativity of painting, making it both relaxing and rewarding.

Materials You’ll Need for the Zentangle Snowflake

  • watercolour paper, canvas, or canvas board

  • Cup of water

  • Rag or cloth

  • Brushes: one-inch flat brush, number six round brush, and a fine detail round brush

  • Acrylic paints: ultramarine blue, cobalt blue, titanium white, mars black, cadmium red (optional)

  • Optional: paint markers such as white or black Posca pens - Sharpies can work fine after the paint is completely dry

Steps for Painting the Zentangle Snowflake

Step 1: Create the Background

Begin by mixing cobalt blue with titanium white and cover your entire surface with this mixture. You can add a bit of mars black or stripes of cobalt blue to create variety and texture in the background.

Apply a couple of coats of paint, then let your background dry for about 20 minutes.

Step 2: Paint the Snowflake

Once the background is dry, use your detail brush and titanium white to paint a large snowflake in the center. You can draw it freehand or use a ruler for more precision. You can add six sides to your snowflake and try to make the snowflake as symmetrical as possible.

For an added fun activity you can check out my snowflake symmetry drawing pages here!

To make the design stand out, paint over the lines a second time to create a thicker, bolder look.

At this stage, you can also add snowflakes in the background. Use your brush to splatter watered-down white paint for small snow-like dots, or paint smaller snowflake shapes around your main design.

Step 3: Add Zentangle-Inspired Designs

Now it’s time to have fun with patterns. Mix titanium white with a touch of mars black to make grey, and paint small designs on alternating arms of the snowflake.

Experiment with mixing ultramarine blue, black, and white to create different shades, then add touches of cadmium red for contrast. Apply these colours in repeating patterns to mimic the symmetry of a snowflake.

You can add as many layers, details, or colours as you like. Once you are happy with your designs, let the painting dry.

Step 4: Optional Details with Paint Markers

For an extra finishing touch, you can use Posca paint pens to outline or enhance your designs. A white pen will pop against darker areas, while black can add bold contrast.

Try adding dots, outlines, or extra Zentangle-inspired patterns directly onto your snowflake or in the background.

Conclusion:

Once you are happy with your design, your Zentangle snowflake painting is complete. Each one will turn out unique, depending on the colours and patterns you choose.

This project makes a wonderful winter decoration and is also a calming activity to do on a snowy day.
