Fall Art Projects Elementary -Drawing

Have you ever had a student who just didn’t want to draw?
The one who sighed at every art project and did the bare minimum to get by?

I had one of those students.
He was bright, funny, and great at math — but art? Not his thing and didn’t want to try.

When I got him again the next year in Grade 5, I was both relieved and determined.
I knew him better now… his interests, his sense of humour, and his love of numbers.

That’s when I introduced symmetry drawing for the first time. 🎨

It was around Halloween, and I printed out skull and pumpkin symmetry pages for the class.
They could count and measure the squares to make their drawings as symmetrical as possible — math meets art.

We put on spooky music, shared a few snacks, and turned it into a friendly symmetry contest.
To everyone’s surprise — especially mine — that same student who hated art ended up winning for his skull drawing.

That one moment reminded me: sometimes all it takes is finding the right entry point.
Now, years later, symmetry drawing has become one of my favourite teaching tools — and my best-selling resource on TPT.

If you’d like to try it with your own students this fall, you can find my Halloween symmetry drawing pages here.

Teaching about symmetry can be both an art lesson and a math lesson. Middle school students in grade 4 and up can try these symmetry line drawings in a fall and Halloween theme. Perfect for teaching about symmetry in September, October and November!

Symmetry drawing is great to help students improve their drawing and fine motor skills while teaching them how to make drawings symmetrical through measuring and using grid lines.

You can check out the Fall and Halloween themed symmetry worksheets here! (for middle school)

This fall art project elementary students love to do during down time or if they finish work early. You can print and photocopy these symmetry worksheets to have on hand.
