Steps for Painting a Colorful Galaxy Sky
Step 1: Paint the Background
First you can start by painting some mars black horizontally across your canvas or painting surface with smooth, horizontal and consistent strokes. You can use your flat one inch brush or number 6 round brush to do this. Then you can mix some cobalt blue with mars black to create a dark blue to blend with the black. Keep painting long and horizontal strokes. With the color you have next, you can add in some cadmium red to create a purple color for your colorful galaxy sky painting. Each row of color is going to be about 2 inches wide. The next color you can blend in with that purple color is naples yellow. If you don't have Naples yellow, you can blend cadmium yellow with titanium white to create a light yellow color. The last bottom inch of your painting you're going to use mars black and this will be the tree line at the bottom of your colorful galaxy sky painting.
Step 2: Paint the Trees
Using a small round detail brush, like a number 2 round brush you can begin to paint the treeline at the bottom of the painting. You will be using Mars black paint to paint the trees try to paint the trees quickly and abstractly so that you're not focussing on having the trees look perfect or the same do you want the trees to not be spaced evenly and to have some trees that are taller than other trees, some trees that are wider than other trees, etc. remember that trees in a forest all look different.
Step 3: Paint the Second Coat of Your Sky
With any background painting, it's good to do two coats of paint to ensure that your painting surface is fully covered. Using the same colors as before, you want to add a second coat of paint on top of the original colors in your sky.
Step 4: Add the Stars
Using your flat 1 inch brush, you can dip it in water, and then dip it in titanium white paint you'll bend the bristles to flick them to create stars. You want to flick your bristles a couple of inches away from the painting surface to create a splatter effect of stars, the farther you hold your brush away from the canvas, the smaller the stars will be. If this is your first time doing this, you could practice on a piece of paper or in your sketchbook, so that you feel comfortable painting the stars if you aren't happy with how the stars turned out or if it looks more like a blob, you can also cover it up with some of that sky color paint and try again so don't worry too much.
Step 5: Painting the Colorful Galaxy Sky
For the next part of the painting, it helps to look at pictures of galaxy skies, or you can follow along by watching the tutorial and clicking here.
You will use your number six round brush, and the colors that you have on your pallet you can mix in some extra titanium white with those colors and you were just going to use a dry brush make sure your brush is dry with no water dip it in some different colors and add some wavy lines for your galaxy sky, going up and down the centre part of your canvas for painting surface. Do you want to mix in some different colors, ensuring that you have a good variety in your colorful galaxy sky painting. You can also mix some extra white or naples yellow towards the bottom of your galaxy sky painting.
